Hey everybody, we should take up the UI on the offer of free lunch Thursday, Dec. 17. Here are the details from Rita Beers:

Instead of the Jingle and Mingle receptions planned for Friday, all UI Health Care employees and volunteers are invited to enjoy a special holiday meal, compliments of UI Health Care. We want to express our appreciation to all of you who have worked selflessly and diligently throughout this year to serve patients and families and to advance our missions of education, research, and patient care. This small gesture is also an opportunity to acknowledge all the meaningful religious and cultural celebrations of the season and to look forward with hope to the new year that will soon be here.

To receive the complimentary meal you will need to show your ID badge and provide a ticket to the cashier. Departmental representatives will provide the tickets. The menu for the holiday meal is turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, mandarin orange gelatin salad, dinner roll, pie, and beverages, and will be served at the following times and locations:

December 17: 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fountain Dining Room, Melrose Dining Room, and Compass Café

Rita says that she's got tickets, and Liz is also taking names for whoever wants one.

Hey everybody, I'm leaving tomorrow (Tuesday) to meet my niece Flicka for the first time. Then I'm on to Thanksgiving from there, so this is my only day at lunch today. Hope to see you all there!

I'm not sure if I'll be at lunch today. We have some moving project that may or may not come in right around that time, but I'm guessing I'll be able to get away.

Going Rogue!

Back during my days as a sandwich maker in the McCain campaign, Steve Schmidt and the Senator's other top advisers repeatedly told me to stay "on message" (e.g., tenderloins in IA, Philly cheese-steaks in PA, etc), but like I always say: "You can put lipstick on a pit-bull, but eventually he's gonna bite back, you betcha!"

Sure enough, one day after clipping some coupons, I decided to buy some turkey, provolone, alfalfa sprouts, onion, avocado and horseradish and slap em all atop 2 slices of bread, which is a non-business-as-usual creation I like to call the "Maverick Sandwich". Well wouldn't you know, the McCain campaign just flipped & accused me of "going rogue." And of course the Liberal Media jumped in, too, calling the Maverick Sandwich an "unthinkably disgusting combination of ingredients."

Well, as anyone who reads "all of them" newspapers like me can tell you, the McCain campaign ended up losing to the campaign to that commie-loving, grandmother-killing immigrant, Barack Osama. But things will be different in 2012, you hear, and that's why I've launched my new book: Going Rogue: an American Cookbook, featuring recipes for meals like the Maverick Sandwich with Freedom Fries and other liberty-loving dishes.

Follow-up

For those of you in attendance Friday, I made the bold and unsubstantiated claim that a hoosier was a dog of some sort. And you all seemed to believe me. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's actually just the term for a person from Indiana. It has some interesting etymology, but it's definitely not in reference to any dog. Sorry!
